Drama At My Dowry

Finally, after two years of dating, Steve and I decided to tie the knot. The journey had been long, uncertain, rocky but finally, Steve had gotten on his knees and manned up. I remember coz it was during one of the party’s that from the blues, he proposed to me and gave me a ring . I loved him, and was happy that our love was becoming official. I called my mum and told her to tell my dad that we would be having visitors. Our custom dictates that the in-laws comes at night, slaughter a goat and basically prepare the food that would be eaten the following day. My mom was beyond the moon, they had been ranting now and then that I needed to get myself a man and finally, their prayers had been answered. We fixed a date and Steve with his parents prepared to come to our home in Mbooni to perform the ceremony. The day was finally here, my mom prepared everything that Steve and his family would need for cooking and sat back waiting for her in-laws. The guests arrived, songs and dances ran in the air and I was getting more and more excited. Steve’s dad was a good looking man, his mother was a beautiful lady at her age and they both made a lovely couple. Steve had also brought his friends, Chege, Phyll, Mwaash and his friend from Meru whose name I could not remember. There was a lovely atmosphere with a lot of expectations, people just relaxed and soaked in the ambiance of the place. We all sat back relaxing, watching Steve’s dad and his uncle tie the mbuzi ready for slaughter. The night had crept in and it was pitch dark apart from the light coming from the lantern near Steve’s dad. My crazy uncle arrived and made the place more lively. He had brought some fruits and gave to all the people who had come. After about an hour, I realized everyone had gone quiet. The stories had stopped. Steve’s dad who had been skinning a goat afew minutes ago was nowhere to be seen, Chege had walked away with Mwaash and disappeared in the darkness. I couldn’t see my Dad and mum, Steve’s Meru friend had disappeared with my aunt. I had seen Phyll and Steve going to get some water, where had everyone gone.

Part 2

Chege, nikii ukuvasa kitimba cha mwanooouu, I shouted when I found Chege. Mwaash was bent supporting her body with a mugoya tree, her skirt up and Chege was riding her hard, his trouser was down to his ankle. Tafasali , tafasali Mueni, mind tu biashara yako, wachana nasisi aki, Chege said to me. iiii, ndeto niyo iyo, ( iii, mambo ndio hiyo) Mwaash said trying to catch her breath. What were these two thinking, I asked myself. Chege, why do you want to spoil my ceremony, do you know ile aibu nitapata if someone was to walk on you two doing this, I asked them. Chege wiped the saliva from his lips. Aki mueni, give us about an hour, tunakuja. Let me go and get Steve, he must see this, I said hurrying away from the scene. I walked away quickly heading towards the river where I had last seen Steve and Phyll heading to. Uuuui, uuuuui, I heard someone shouting in a ditch, I walked towards the sound quickly thinking someone was in trouble. Upon reaching the site, I saw Steve Meru friend on top of my aunt. She was lying on her back her skirt lifted to her waist. Uuui uuuui, Steve’s Meru friend kept screaming as he pumped her. Auntie, auntie, I shouted at her. Mweni ondoka hapa, she shouted back. What was happening, first, Chege and Mwaash, now my Aunt and Steve’s Meru friend. I walked away and just as I was passing by my parents house, I heard my mother screaming from the bedroom. From the sound and curses she was hurling, I knew it was not a scream of pain. All this time, my uncle was sitted with a devilish smile on his face. I walked towards the river hoping against hope that the same was not happening to Steve and Phyll.

Part 3

I walked praying and hoping my man was not doing what I was thinking. As I walked, I heard some commotion in the bush and when they heard me they kind of stopped, wee endelea, nikiiii mani, I heard a female voice shouting. I didn’t even look to see who it was. As I got near the river, I saw the bucket Steve and Phyll had carried to get water but I couldn’t see the two. I walked slowly towards a thicket and suddenly heard a slap. Someone had been slapped hard. I walked towards the sound cautious. Another slap came and this time I heard someone talking. Steve wacha ujinga, yaani nakupee na roho yangu yote alafu unakataa. I peeped to see Phyll naked sitting on top of Steve, how she got there I don’t know. Phyll, kwani what has come over you, Steve asked her. Does it matter, what matters is what you can see, Phyll insisted, unanipee ama hunipei, she asked again trying to remove his trouser. Steve held on to his trouser like his life depended on it. The bulge in his trouser was big. Phyll, what if Mueni was to walk on us like this, what do you think she would think we are doing. Do I really care, Phyll answered. All I know Is that i have this big thirst that I need quenched , nothing else. Uuuuuii, she started screaming. Shhhhh, someone will hear you, Steve’s said. I don’t care, I need you to do me, Phyll shouted. She was becoming hysterical. Steve lifted himself up, lifted her up and threw her in the water. You need to cool down. I watched as Phyll struggled to come out of the water. There was a shocking expression on her face, like she didn’t expect it. I walked to where they were and called Steve. Steve was shocked to see me, Mueni, this is not what you think, he said coming towards me. Phyll saw me and ran towards the house. I know Steve, I saw what you did, I replied. He was sweating, Mueni, I don’t know what’s wrong but there is this ache in me I don’t know where its coming from, am so horny. Don’t worry baby, mama is here, I said lifting my skirt and bending over, soon it was Steve screaming. As we walked home I started thinking what could have happened and no answer came to me. I thought the worst had happened that night, but I guess tomorrow had not come, more shock was come.

Part 4

Steve and I walked back towards the compound and sat where we had been sitted before vituko zianze. Slowly by slowly, the culprits began coming one by one. Chege came whistling like he had done nothing. Bado mko, he asked sitting down. Soon, Mwaash followed singing. They both sat without saying a word. Steve’s Meru friend was next to come, Kigotho, kwani ulikua wapi, Steve asked. Even before he could answer, my aunt followed. She had left her husband home and he was to join us the following day. Guys, kwani what the fuck happened here, Steve asked. Before they could answer, his parents chomokad from a bush and joined us. His dad continued from where he had left skinning the goat. My parents were the last to come. Everybody was silent. We all knew what had happened but no one was willing to talk about it. Kwani what has come over people, I asked myself. Mueni, are we still on with the ceremony, my dad asked . Ofcourse yes, I replied. My Steve had been faithful to me and saw no reason to cancel the ceremony. What happened to the others was none of my business. Steve and his people cooked the whole night and the following day, invited guests started streaming in our compound. Introductions were done and soon, the real negotiations began. My dad and uncle demanded a lot from Steve’s parents. In my mind , it was like they were trying to make things difficult for Steve’s people. Tension and tempers began to rise. Everyone was exercising self control until a voice came from Steves side shouting, andu aya nimatutigithie wana ( hawa watu waache ujinga) kama hamutaki kutupatia msichana wenu mnaeza kaa tu naye, matigatureterere ( wasituletee) it was Chege.

Part 5

Ati umesema nini kijana, one of Muenis uncle asked. Ndoiga atiriri, mutige wana, ( nimesema hivi, muache utoto) kama hamtaki kutupatia msichana mkae nayeye, Chege replied. He appeared drunk. I walked over and asked him to shut up. Hawa watu wametukosea heshima na si ati ni pesa ya maana wanaleta hapa, a friend of my dad said. Walianza tu Jana usiku, my aunt said angrily. Shhhhh, hiyo mambo ya Jana usiku nyamazia, another one shushed her. Nooo, siwezi nyamaza, ever since these people came, people are becoming nyeged anyhowly, when was the last time you saw people getting horny at the same time, there is something that these people are doing to cause this, the aunt continued to shout. Who told you about that, were you there, did you see anyone doing what you are saying. iiiii, ni wakamau ameniambia, kwanza anasema ile kitu alipatiwa Jana hata baba Kamau hawezi fikisha quarter. Mama kamau mgani, mama kamau yule wangu, baba kamau asked looking for her. Wakamau, wakamau, ni ndeto iriku ichi ndiraigua ( mama kamau , ni story gani hizi naskia huku). My aunt curled herself near my mum. Ni uwongo she shouted. Things were becoming crazy, the issue at hand was temporarily forgotten and the previous night revisited. Yaani you guys are saying we are the cause of last night, Kigothi asked. Do you guys know how we suffered. Baba kamau suddenly jumped at my aunt and started beating her. My aunt screamed and my dad went to restrain him. He struggled to get to my aunt who was shouting in defiance. You want to kill me, unataka kuniua, she kept repeating. Before you kill me pretending here that you are a saint, can you tell these people what you did to mama Mueni. Shhhhh, My mum said holding my aunt mouth with her hand. What did you do to my wife, my father suddenly said turning to baba kamau whom all of a sudden had kept quiet ni kama amepigwa na shock.

Part 6

Ngai ma niku guku Steve utuletire ( Mungu wangu ni wapi huku Steve uliteleta) baba Steve shouted raising his hands. Baba Mueni jumped at Chege as if to hit him. Wee nawe kai wimukigu( we nawewe kwani uko mjinga) mtu anakula bibi yako badala umtwange ni mimi unarukia, Chege shouted. Hapo ni kweli, Phyll shouted in support of Chege. Mama Mueni, is it true what they are saying. Is it true that he has tasted the good stuff, my dad asked. Please sit down baba mueni. Yes, alinikula, but it was not our fault. Uuuuuiiii, my dad screamed, ati what mama mueni. Ilikua makosa ya Nani, yaaani hi fucks you and its somebody else faults. Mama Steve, kai turetirwo kwa ngoma, ( mama Steve , kwani tuliletwa kwa shetani) baba Steve said standing. Baba Mueni, it was not our fault, ask your brother he is the cause of all this mess, my mum said pointing at my uncle who was sipping his tea like he was not even part of the story. Ati what, how did my brother come into this, my dad said walking towards his brother. Kimeu, hiii ni maneno gani mama mueni anasema. Ndugu yangu, makosa sio yangu, Makosa iko katikati ya shamba

Part 7

I became fascinated by a tree which was in the middle of the shamba I had just bought. The person who sold me the land told me not to eat the fruits that came out of that tree and if I did, I have to have access to the river between. For a few months, I kept asking myself how do I access the river between so as to be able to eat the fruits. I called the man again and asked him what he meant by the river between. He only complicated things more by telling me that, in that river all men comes out head first and every time they go in they go in head first. I kept asking myself, where is this river, where is this river. This riddle made me almost mad. I has to try it on someone and see the results. Baba Kamau is not one of my favourite people and he was the right person to try out my fruit on. I timed until he came to your house to get some milk since I knew he could not come to my house. I carried three fruits, one for me and two for him. I had to pretend that I was eating the fruit. After I handed the fruits to him, he started on one and just as he was finishing, mama Mueni snatched one from him. I almost fell down in shock when I saw her eating. I wanted to warn her but if I did, they would have found me out. I waited anxiously for what would happen praying I had not just poisoned my brothers wife. After one a few minutes, I saw Baba kamau begin to sweat. Mama mueni went inside, took a shower , took another one and the next thing I heard was her calling Baba kamau to go inside. ile ndulu niliskia huko sitawahi sahau. Forgive me brother
